A survey of homeowners found that a majority of them would rather have their tubs reglazed than replaced. It makes sense. Long Island bathtub reglazing service is not only performed by professionals, but it looks nice, is affordable, and does not take weeks to do. It definitely sounds like the best option out there.

If you are unfamiliar with tub reglazing, this is the perfect blog for you. We will review the different steps in the process so that you can not only make sure your contractors are doing it right but to ensure you know what to expect throughout the process.

Get the Workspace Prepared

Before any reglazing project begins, the workspace needs to be properly prepped. All surrounding surfaces will need to be properly covered to prevent any issues or debris from getting on them. The bathroom space should have the exhaust fan on and a window open, when possible. Good ventilation is key.

Prep the Area

Prepping the area will take some time, but not too long. Only after the area has been prepared for work should the next stages occur. The first step will be for the caulk to be removed from the tub. Before that process even starts, the plate over the tub drain needs to be taken out.

Cutting the caulk is easy and once it is loose, it can quickly be removed and pulled from the tub surround. If a silicone caulk was used, special chemicals to break down the silicone will be used.

Next, the tub will be cleaned. A dirty tub will not reglaze well as the glaze will not stick to it properly. Your tub will be scoured out with chemicals and a scrub pad. Close attention will be paid to the areas around the drain and any soap dishes, as these areas are known to accumulate soap and other debris.

Repair and Sand the Tub

Once smooth and clean, our contractors will be able to better see any damage such as cracks and chips in your tub. These blemishes need to be handled before the glaze is placed to ensure proper coating and a job well done.

To repair these areas, a filler will be applied to the damaged areas and the filler will be allowed to dry completely.

Once dry, the tub will then be sanded down to prepare it for the glaze application. It is important that the contractors take care to avoid dust and debris getting out into your house, so a tarp or sheeting may be hung over the doorway to the bathroom.

Dust and debris will now be removed from the tub and a lacquer thinner will be applied.

Glaze the Tub

Masking tape will be applied to section off the tile on the wall and the flooring. Masking tape may even be placed over the drain.

Now that the tub is ready to be reglazed, the process will start. The tub will need some time to dry, so you can expect it to take anywhere between 24 to 48 hours for the project to be completed.
